Dissolved/dispersed polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon spatial and temporal changes in the Western Gulf of Mexico

چکیده

Oil extraction and transport activities in the Gulf of Mexico (GoM), along with major marine oil spills riverine inputs, are exerting environmental pressure on this system by increasing concentration oil-related pollutants such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). To fully identify these changes related to activities, current PAH levels should be established. Here, we present low molecular weight/high weight (LMW/HMW) ratios obtained Perdido Fold Belt area surface bottom water at four cruises from May 2016 September 2017. The 1 (P1) cruise was conducted 2016, 2 (P2) September–October 3 (P3) June 2017, 4 (P4) Samples were taken during each up 3,500-m depth, deepest ever recorded for GoM. Results show that highest concentrations PAH, LMW PAHs, HMW PAHs found P4 (1.15, 1.05, 0.10 µg/L, respectively), well below 300 µg/L guideline acute exposure. LMW/HMW only P1 indicates pyrogenic hydrocarbons, while P2, P3, petrogenic. spatial distribution total LMW, showed higher values southern northeastern areas, except P4, which high inputs. complex hydrodynamic region have a significant effect seasonal changes, river contributions, eddy circulation, fronts promote their dispersion.

The polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon degradation potential of Gulf of Mexico native coastal microbial communities after the Deepwater Horizon oil spill

The Deepwater Horizon (DWH) blowout resulted in oil transport, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) to the Gulf of Mexico shoreline. The microbial communities of these shorelines are thought to be responsible for the intrinsic degradation of PAHs. To investigate the Gulf Coast beach microbial community response to hydrocarbon exposure, we examined the functional gene diversity, bac...

Spatial and temporal variability of particulate polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in Mexico City

As part of the Megacities Initiative: Local and Global Research Observations (MILAGRO) study in the Mexico City Metropolitan Area in March 2006, we measured particulate polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and other gaseous species and particulate properties, including light absorbing carbon or effective black carbon (BC), at six locations throughout the city. The measurements were intended ...

Temporal and spatial variations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon concentrations around a coke oven plant.

UNLABELLED From 1995 to 2004, in Genoa, Italy, daily concentrations of twelve polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were measured in particulate phase (PM10), around a coke oven plant in operation from the 1950s and closed in 2002. The study permitted to identify the coke oven as the main PAH source in Genoa, causing constant exceeding of benzo(a)pyrene (BaP) air quality target (1.0 ng/m3) in...

Spatial and Temporal Variability and Drivers of Net Ecosystem Metabolism in Western Gulf of Mexico Estuaries

Net ecosystem metabolism (NEM) is becoming a commonly used ecological indicator of estuarine ecosystem metabolic rates. Estuarine ecosystem processes are spatially and temporally variable, but the corresponding variability in NEM has not been properly assessed. Spatial and temporal variability in NEM was assessed in four western Gulf of Mexico shallow water estuaries. NEM was calculated from hi...

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon selected galaxies

Context. This is the fourth in a series of papers based on the ISOCAM Parallel Survey at 6.7 μm. While the first three papers have been devoted to active galactic nuclei (AGN), here we report on emission-line galaxies without AGN signatures in their optical spectra. Aims. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission has been found in both starbursts and modestly starforming galaxies, but the ...
